The Onyx Obscurity

The Back Story

The Onyx Obscurity is a Fall/Winter collection inspired by the exquisite black on black pottery of the Puebloan Native Americans. Two very successful artists immersed in this great craftsmanship are Maria Martinez, and Nancy Youngblood. Martinez's work plays with lighting and texture, while Youngblood’s plays with dimension.

Look #1 is an homage to Maria Martinez. The use of Light manipulation in her art creates different black tones and textures. With this in mind, innovative fabrics are exclusively tailored for this collection. Unconventional materials such as bobby pins is my interpretation of this technique. Other fall and winter fabrics such as woolen, silks, and knits occur once again. Finally, an achromatic tonal scheme concludes the collection.

Next, look #2 pays homage to Nancy Youngblood. Dimensional shapes and silhouettes revolve in this collection. Fall and Winter fabrics such as woolens, silks, and knits, remain constant throughout this delivery. Defining moments are “s” swirled seamwork, and circular motif patterns. Rounding off the collection are the clay and earth tone inspired dark brown, taupe, charcoal, grey, and signature black.

My target customer is a well-established career woman from late twenties to mid-forties. Her insecurities are completely behind her and she embraces her artistic and unique style. Working in the entertainment industry she is immaculately-groomed at all times. While she is confident, her wardrobe remains classic. Sophisticated pieces and colors such as black, that can be worn anytime of the year are a must have for her and underline her sophistication. The market that targets this customer is designer Sportswear ready-to-wear. Through this collection she can also style separate pieces to create a look of her own.
